PHD STIPEND IN GENE THERAPY AT THE BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER
At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology, one or more positions as a PhD fellow in Gene Therapy at the Blood-Brain Barrier are available in the PhD program "Clinical Science and Biomedicine" from 1 November 2021 or soon thereafter.
Department of Health Science and Technology carries out multidisciplinary research, teaching and dissemination within biomedical engineering, sports science and medicine. The department has more than 250 employees and is responsible for more than 1700 students. More than 100 PhD students are enrolled in the doctoral school affiliated to the department. The researchers are organized in a number of research groups and centres, and the department has at its disposal laboratory and clean room facilities for cell growth, molecular biology, brain analysis, 3D movement analysis, respiratory and circulatory examinations, sensory and motor functions analysis, etc. All study programs at Aalborg University involve problem-based learning, organized around cases and projects. As The Faculty of Medicine wishes PhD positions to enable careers both within and outside the university, the vacant positions are created in such a way that the competences achieved in the position will qualify for both a research career and a career in the commercial and/or public sector. The blood-brain barrier is found in the capillaries of the brain and forms a barrier that regulates the passage of molecules from the blood to the brain, which in many cases limits the possibility of delivering therapeutic molecules to the brain. The position is part of the research group’s activities, which investigate how large biological drugs can be transported through this blood-brain barrier.
The prospective PhD student will work on gene therapy at the blood-brain barrier, with a view of transporting therapeutic molecules to the brain, including the production, purification, and titration of viral vectors for gene therapy, including molecular cloning, qPCR, flow cytometry, and cell culture. The student must anticipate a stay abroad of 3-6 months spread over one or more visits to a university in northern Germany in order to learn techniques for the production of the therapeutic viruses.
The future PhD student will work with testing of gene therapy both in vivo and in vitro: In vivo by injection of viruses on genetically engineered mice, where effects are examined in real-time with scanning and behavioral studies, and post-mortem with molecular biology, histological examinations and microscopy. In vitro in suitable models of the blood-brain barrier, the therapeutic effect of gene therapy on diseased cells is investigated.
The PhD scholarship is set at 3 man-years and funded by a grant from the Danish Health Science Research Council. It is expected to a limited extent that the future PhD student teaches within the area of competence during the course. The PhD scholarship will be linked to the PhD program at AAU and the research group Neurobiology Research and Drug Delivery at the Department of Medicine and Health Technology at Aalborg University. The research results are to be disseminated in scientific articles that make up the PhD dissertation, while an ongoing dissemination of preliminary results to the LNB research group and national international collaborators is also expected.
The scholarship can be applied for by graduates with a passed master’s degree related to the academic content of the project.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
